    Two recent incidents involving the use of high-pressure water spray equipment on asbestos roofs have resulted in asbestos contaminated dust or debris (ACD) being spread across each of the sites in addition to neighbouring properties. Investigations into both incidents are continuing.

    Two workers injured in fire and explosion at boatyard

    In a recent incident, two workers suffered serious burns as a result of an explosion and fire at a marine facility. Initial enquiries indicate both workers were installing inboard marine engines into the floor of a boat located on a hardstand at the time. At some point during the installation process, the workers undertook testing of the engines using an auxiliary fuel tank as it appears the main petrol tanks were disconnected. At some point during the testing process, for reasons yet to be established, an explosion and fire occurred resulting in serious burns to both workers. Investigations are continuing.

    In December 2023, a worker at a civil construction site received an electric shock when the mobile plant he was operating contacted overhead powerlines. Early investigations have found that the male worker was revived after treatment and transported to hospital.

    In May 2023, a person was electrocuted while attempting to repair a water leak in an underground pipe. Early enquiries indicated that the person unearthed a black poly water pipe believed to be the water pipe that required repair, and then cut into it using conduit shears.

    Four overhead powerline incidents involving plant and machinery

    In May 2023, a worker was seriously injured after receiving an electric shock at a worksite. Initial enquiries indicated a concrete box culvert was being moved onsite by a pick-and-carry mobile crane with the worker helping. It appears the worker was touching part of the concrete box when the crane came into contact with overhead powerlines.

    Worker injured while inflating truck tyre

    In October 2023, a worker sustained head and chest injuries when an inflated truck tyre exploded. Preliminary information suggested a truck tyre exploded when the worker was fitting a re-inflated tyre to the truck. It appeared the inside of the tyre wasn’t inspected prior to inflating and inflation didn’t occur inside a tyre cage.
