    Four injured in workplace explosion

    In November 2021, one worker was seriously injured while three other workers received minor injuries following a workplace explosion and fire. Early enquiries indicate an “extractor” has exploded. This machine is used to extract rosin and turpentine from pine wood chips by spraying hot turpentine over the wood chips in a process known as solvent extraction. For reasons yet to be established, an explosion has occurred. Investigations are continuing.

    Worker burned following chemical explosion

    In November 2021, a worker suffered burns to his shoulders, knees and face following an explosion at a marine maintenance facility. Early enquires indicate he was doing fibreglass repair work inside the hull of a boat using acetone. It appears a nearby heat gun has potentially ignited vapours generated by the acetone resulting in an explosion. Investigations are continuing.

    In September 2021, a contractor suffered multiple fractures and a severe laceration while repairing a chipper disk weighing around two tonnes. For reasons yet to be established, the unrestrained chipper disc (part of a large wood chipping machine) has fallen from an upright position striking the contractor’s leg as it fell.

    Worker killed by piece of metal ejected from unguarded angle grinder

    In June 2021, a worker died from injuries sustained while he was using a 9-inch (230mm) angle grinder to cut the base of a structural steel member at a commercial construction site in Brisbane. It appears a small metal shard was violently ejected from the cutting work and struck his neck. No guarding was fitted to the angle grinder at the time.

    In January 2021, a farmer died when the tractor he was operating struck a log and rolled. The farmer had been using the tractor to pull out a bogged car and do some spraying. He was thrown from the tractor when it rolled and was trapped underneath the rear mounted chemical tank.
