New conditions for white cards in Queensland

General construction induction training (GCIT) provides important foundational knowledge of work health and safety laws, common site hazards, and information on how to control risks in the construction industry.

Under Queensland laws, anyone carrying out construction work must hold a GCIT card. GCIT cards, also referred to as 'white cards', are issued by registered training organisations (RTOs) approved by Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ), when a student successfully completes the GCIT course (either CPCCWHS1001 or CPCWHS1001).

The process involves approved RTOs entering into an agreement with WHSQ, which requires the RTO to comply with certain conditions. New conditions have recently been introduced and RTOs are now required to notify WHSQ of upcoming GCIT courses at least 24 hours before the start of a GCIT course. This means RTOs will no longer be able to offer GCIT to people without prior notice.

The new conditions also:

• allow GCIT to be delivered face-to-face via connected real time delivery (CRTD) where an RTO is approved to do so
• requires GCIT trainers are approved by WHSQ
• caps class sizes at 15 students per trainer
• requires that the GCIT course runs for a minimum of 4.5 hours
• requires that RTOs use a mandated GCIT assessment (due to come into effect February 2023).
