Safe charging this Christmas
Electric scooters and other lithium-ion battery (LiB) operated toys are sure to be on the Christmas list this year. With several recent fires involving e-scooters in Queensland, it’s important to know how to safely store and charge these devices.
There are a number of things to consider to keep everyone safe this festive season.
Storage location
- The storage area for electrical devices needs to be cool, dry, and well-ventilated. Proper airflow also helps prevent overheating, which is a risk for electrical devices.
- Keep storage spaces sheltered to protect devices from environmental elements (rain and direct sunlight), and avoid areas with poor air circulation (carports, sheds etc) which could increase the risk of heat buildup.
- Do not place LiB operated devices in storage areas near children's play zones or flammable materials. Electrical equipment, especially if charged, can pose significant fire risks if it overheats or malfunctions.
Charging
Keeping your devices charged and ready for daily use is essential however you must ensure your chargers meet Australian safety standards and display the RCM mark to confirm compliance.
It’s important to only use chargers that are compatible with the specific device model and brand. Source replacement chargers from the original manufacturer/supplier.
While it might be convenient, do not charge devices overnight or when the building is unoccupied unless adequate safety measures are in place (e.g., fire alarms, sprinklers, suitable locations).
Frequently check charging devices and equipment for damage, especially before use. Discontinue use of the device or equipment if any issues are identified.
Allow devices to cool before beginning charging. Always ensure sufficient clear space around charging e-bikes and e-scooters to prevent overheating and allow proper ventilation.
Safety measures
With the increase of LiB-operated equipment around homes, be sure to follow these safety tips to keep you and your family stay safe:
- install smoke detectors in the storage area and consider fire sprinkler systems
- keep exits clear, particularly from the charging of devices
- restrict access to the building or location where charging occurs
- before accepting the devices for storing and/or charging, ensure the devices comply with the relevant safety standards.
