Urgent product recalls: Billy Kettle and Ecogenica hot water systems pose electric shock risk

Product Safety Australia has issued recalls for two popular household products due to serious safety risks, with consumers urged to take immediate action to prevent potential injury or death.

Both the Billy kettle, model YK-889, and the Ecogenica heat pump hot water system, model EG-215F, have been identified as posing a risk of electric shock.

The Billy 1.7L electric kettle recall was triggered by a defect where water can leak from the kettle and come into contact with live electrical components. This creates a significant risk of electric shock, which could cause severe injury or even death.

If you own a Billy kettle model YK-889, stop using it immediately. Unplug the device from the power outlet, and to prevent further use, after it’s unplugged cut the power cord in half. Take a photograph of the product and contact Ritual Unions at recall@ritualunions.com to arrange a full refund.

The Ecogenica heat pump hot water system recall concerns systems where the control panel is installed inside the heat pump unit. If a user attempts to access the control panel to adjust settings, they could inadvertently come into contact with live electrical components. This poses a serious risk of electric shock. Consumers are advised not to attempt to access the control panel if it is located inside the heat pump unit. Instead, contact Eco Alliance by emailing installationsupport@ecoalliance.com.au or calling 1300 082 596 between 9 am and 5 pm, Monday to Friday, to schedule an authorised technician to repair the unit.

These product recalls underscore the importance of ensuring that household appliances meet safety standards. Both the Billy kettle and the Ecogenica hot water system present immediate hazards if used, so it’s crucial that consumers follow recall instructions without delay to avoid any risk of electric shock.
