New campaign launched targeting DIYers

Times when it’s ok to DIY fail – trying to fix a wonky table or hanging up a shelf incorrectly… times when it’s not – DIY electrical work.

The Electrical Safety Office (ESO) has launched a new campaign targeting the DIYers who think they can do their own electrical work instead of using a licensed electrical professional. Campaigns like this are an important part of the work ESO deliver, preventing fatality and serious injury of Queenslanders not just at work, but also in the community.

DIY electrical work is often underreported in non-work injury statistics, prompting this key message to shared – with campaign research revealing Queenslanders engage in DIY electrical work far more frequently than expected – on average, 20 times in their lifetime and four times in the past year.

It may be tempting for homeowners to consider saving some money, or perhaps they may think it seems simple enough to DIY electrical work, we want them to know that unless qualified and trained there are lots of risks they just won’t know about, and it’s not worth risking their life.

Whether that’s installing a light switch or power point, replacing a light fitting with a ceiling fan, repairing electrical equipment, constructing an extension lead or replacing a plug on the end of an extension lead, we’re educating Queenslanders that they should always use a licensed electrician.

Whilst this campaign isn’t for our licensed sparkies out there who know what they are doing, if you have friends or family members who have the attitude of ‘how hard could it be?’ we’d love you to share the campaign video with them to remind them they should NEVER do their own electrical work, it’s not worth risking their life.
