Queenslanders step up for asbestos safety

As part of Asbestos Awareness Week, Workplace Health and Safety Queensland hosted a record-breaking webinar with almost 1300 registrants eager to learn how to live and work safely with asbestos.

The expert-led webinar attracted a diverse audience of homeowners, tradespeople, and DIY enthusiasts from every state and territory in Australia, including the Northern Territory and the ACT. The interactive session centred on small projects, covered vital topics including:

  • how to identify asbestos-containing materials in homes built before 1990
  • the dangers of using high-pressure water blasting on asbestos materials
  • real-life case studies highlighting the consequences of mishandling asbestos, including legal penalties and health risks
  • safe removal requirements and how to transport and dispose of up to 10m² of non-friable asbestos.

The hidden danger in older homes

Homes and buildings constructed before 1990 may contain asbestos in materials such as roofing, fences, bathroom tiles and insulation. While asbestos is considered safe when left undisturbed, improper handling can release harmful, invisible fibres into the air, posing serious health risks.

A powerful story to inspire action

One of the most impactful resources from Asbestos Awareness Week is the film ‘Losing Breath – The Adam Sager Story’, created with Queensland Safety Advocates Julie and Don Sager. The film shares the heartbreaking story of their son Adam, who tragically passed away from mesothelioma after being exposed to asbestos as a child. It’s a sobering reminder of why awareness and safe practices are so critical.
