Mobile plant and traffic management in construction the focus of our next compliance campaign

During March and April 2025, our inspectors will be conducting a statewide proactive compliance campaign targeting mobile plant and traffic management in the construction industry—with a specific focus on the interaction between pedestrians and mobile plant on sites.

Part of WHSQ’s Compliance and Field Services Proactive Compliance Program 2024-2027 (PDF, 0.65 MB), inspectors will conduct audits, assess compliance and take action where breaches are identified.

Employers are encouraged to review their risk management processes to ensure they are focusing on critical risks of this hazard type which could include:

  • workers getting trapped between a vehicle and a structure
  • vehicles colliding with each other or a structure
  • workers being hit by a vehicle
  • the plant overturning
  • mechanical or other failures (e.g. hydraulic failures, release of hazardous substances)
  • items that fall off vehicles (unsecured or unstable loads).

A good practical understanding of mobile plant and traffic management laws is essential and can help to prevent incidents from occurring.
