Staying safe following the north Queensland weather event
The recent north and far north Queensland weather event has brought significant challenges to our communities, particularly during the recovery phase. Following these safety guidelines can help protect you and your family during the clean-up and recovery phase.
Electrical safety
Never attempt your own electrical work after a storm or flood—always use a licensed electrician. If you have a solar power system, avoid the roof unless necessary and stay away from solar panels and cables. Keep generators outdoors in a well-ventilated area to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Stay away from damaged switchboards and warn others to do the same.
Did you know you can check the status of electrical contractor licence numbers through our online Electrical Licence Search?
If you can’t find your electrician in the database, call us on 1300 362 128.
Unlicensed electrical work is illegal and dangerous, and we need your help to stop it. If you see any non-compliant electrical work or see any unlicensed electrical work being done or advertised in Queensland–report it.
Stay safe—reduce your risk during recovery efforts
- Maintain good hand and personal hygiene
- Clean and cover cuts and wounds
- Wear protective clothing when contact with floodwater and mud is unavoidable
- Take precautions to prevent mosquito bites
- Prevent heat stress by staying hydrated and taking regular breaks
- Avoid electrocution risks by not touching electrical equipment if it is wet
- Avoid driving except in emergencies.
After the floodwaters recede, hidden dangers remain. Take precautions when returning to your property, wear protective gear, and ensure all utilities are checked by professionals before use.
Asbestos safety
Many homes constructed before 1990 contain asbestos materials. Flood damage may expose asbestos, creating a health risk. Handle asbestos safely by avoiding disturbance and keeping materials damp to prevent dust exposure.
Work health and safety laws
Employers and workers involved in storm and flood recovery efforts must remember their obligations under Queensland's health and safety laws. By being vigilant and maintaining safety, you can help reduce the risk of death, injury, and illness during the clean-up and repair effort.
