First progress report – Statewide Strategic Plan for the Safe Management of Asbestos 2022–2025

The comprehensive Statewide Strategic Plan for the Safe Management of Asbestos 2022–2025 to minimise the risk of asbestos exposure and protect workers, the community and the environment has had its first annual progress report published.

The report details 17 key achievements since the plan launched, including publication of four films showing homeowners and tradies where asbestos may be found in homes built in the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.

Across four priority areas the Strategic Plan outlines 23 actions to minimise the risks of exposure to asbestos, including targeted awareness advice, effective management of asbestos material (imported and naturally occurring), removal, transport and disposal of asbestos waste, and effective compliance and enforcement of the regulation.

The Strategic Plan was endorsed by the Queensland Government in July 2022 and will operate over three years, coordinating the efforts of state and local government agencies to ensure the detrimental impacts of asbestos are minimised. Annual progress reports will be available on the Government’s dedicated asbestos website.

Workplace Health and Safety Queensland led the development of the Statewide Strategic Plan for the Safe Management of Asbestos in Queensland 2022–2025, in collaboration with an interagency group comprised of state government departments with asbestos-related regulatory responsibilities and the Local Government Association of Queensland.
