New guide to prevent slip, trips and falls

Did you know that one in eight of all Queensland workers’ compensation claims are caused by slips, trips and falls on the same level?

Did you know that six out of 10 of these injuries result in at least a week off work?

In response to the high prevalence of work-related slips, trips and falls (STF) incidents, Workplace Health and Safety Queensland, in consultation with external experts and industry, has published the new guide to prevent slips, trips and falls at work (PDF, 1.38 MB).

This guide includes new content that addresses gaps in existing guidance material and highlights other important issues not often considered when preventing STF.  It provides valuable information to help understand the causes of slips, trips and falls, as well as simple and inexpensive ways workplaces can manage these hazards.

The guide includes practical tips including how to:

  • control the risks in outdoor environments such as carparks and outdoor paths
  • manage the risks for worksites that are constantly changing, such as construction sites which have rotating work activities, work environments and duty holders, as well as being exposed to the weather
  • minimise slips, trips and falls following and during weather events
  • select and maintain suitable footwear for the workplace
  • plan for the design of accessways, including stairs or ramps
  • recognise and minimise the impact of work demands and fatigue on STF risks
