PErforM overview: Controlling the risks of hazardous manual tasks

PErforM (Participative Ergonomics for Manual Tasks) is a simplified manual task risk management program that's based on a participative ergonomics approach.

Internationally, there is an increasing body of research supporting the use of a participative ergonomics approach for the control of manual task risks. The research shows that this approach decreases manual tasks risks and reduces musculoskeletal injuries, workers' compensation claims and days lost to absence due to sickness.

The free webinar, hosted by WorkCover Queensland and presented by Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ), provided attendees with an introduction to how PErforM is used to control hazardous manual tasks. The webinar included:

  • hazardous manual tasks legislation and risk management principles
  • case study examples and a practical activity using the risk assessment tool
  • considerations for implementation of the program and the resources available.

WHSQ presenter Suzanne Johnson said PErforM provides a framework to help employers engage with workers at all levels to identify, assess and control manual tasks risks within their workplace.

“The idea of PErforM is that the worker is the expert in performing their work tasks. The PErforM program has been used successfully in a wide range of industries and can be applied to most types of hazardous manual tasks.”

WorkCover Queensland Customer Services Manager Michelle Ware added that the program was an excellent way for employers to find out some useful strategies to reduce injuries, and therefore reduce workers' compensation claims.

“I'd encourage small and medium sized businesses to attend this program to see the different approach they can take to reducing musculoskeletal problems in their workplace,” she said.
