Hazardous chemicals

Current chemical classification and labelling provision and Globally Harmonised System (GHS) will operate concurrently until 31 December 2016. During this transition stage, both labelling systems are acceptable.

The Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011 does not include a flammable and combustible liquid licensing regime administered in Queensland by local councils.

ChemClear making farms safer one container at a time

An industry initiative to remove unwanted hazardous chemicals from farms is helping to reduce the potential safety risks associated with deteriorating chemical containers.

The initiative helps to reduce the stocks of unwanted agricultural chemicals on farms that present both an environmental and safety risk to farmers, workers and families, as the containers deteriorate over time.

Under the ChemClear program, unwanted chemicals are classified into two groups:

• Group 1 chemicals are products which have been registered and will be collected by ChemClear at no cost.
• Group 2 are unregistered and will attract a fee for collection; however the Queensland Department of Environment and Heritage Protection will offer a 50% subsidy to farmers in this category wishing to dispose of chemicals.

Always take care when handling old chemical containers that are corroded or otherwise unsafe.

It is important to wear the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling chemical containers. People handling the containers should always refer to the container label which specifies what PPE should be worn.

If the label is not visible it is important to wear overalls, chemical resistant gloves, a face shield and a half face respirator, while inspecting and holding any suspect containers.

ChemClear is an industry initiative under the Industry Waste Reduction Agreement. It is supported through funds contributed by farmers under the existing drumMuster levy, and through a separate contribution from participating chemical manufacturing companies.
